What’s a Good Diet for My Child?
Your child’s dietary habits have a tremendous impact on oral health. In fact, these choices are just as important as oral hygiene. Here are a few nutritional tips to keep your little one’s teeth healthy and cavity free:
Drink Plenty of Water
Tap water is fluoridated, encouraging healthy tooth and bone development in children. It also acts as a natural cleanser, rinsing away bacteria throughout the day. If your child insists on having drinks between meals or going to bed with a drink, don’t give her anything other than water, as even natural drinks like milk or juice increase the risk of tooth decay.
Encourage Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Crispy fruits and vegetables are full of important vitamins and minerals that boost your immune system. They also clean your child’s teeth as she eats. Some healthy snacks to keep on hand include examples like carrots, apples or celery.
Cheese and Yogurt
Cheese and yogurt are full of calcium, but they can also prevent bacteria buildup in the mouth. Studies show that snacking on cheese will limit plaque on the teeth.
Wean From Bottles and Sippy Cups
Extended use of the bottle or sippy cups can affect biting patterns, but it also allows liquids to pool longer around the teeth, increasing the rate of cavities.
Limit Sugar Intake
Sugars hide in things that you least expect, like chewy “fruit” snacks and drinks like fruit juices or chocolate milk. Sipping or snacking on these between meals can make teeth decay at a quicker rate. Limit them or restrict them to mealtimes only.
